rare patches work in more than one rom or even in roms with other patches already applied (0) you look for official patch creator information like: game name, game version, rom characteristics (if it needs to have header or not), patch characteristics (if it needs to apply pad later, if it needs to correct internal checksum, etc), supported emulators, and whether or not it has been tested on official hardware one call hard-patch and one call soft-patch.
This made the activity more difficult rather than easier!
